The Carnival of Alhama de Granada
On Sunday, 9th March 2025, we were in Alhama de Granada with our van. Due to inclement weather, we remained indoors. However, in the afternoon, the weather improved, allowing us to take a walk through the city. We encountered a lively and vibrant atmosphere as Alhama was celebrating carnival. The residents were dressed in costumes and displayed great enthusiasm. There was music, and the sun had emerged, enhancing the festive mood. The village was in full celebration. We greatly appreciated the joyful spirit of the people and captured numerous photographs, which we aspire to share with the villagers.

The carnival of Alhama de Granada is a vibrant celebration that perfectly captures the cheerful spirit and cultural identity of the people of Jameños. This lively festivity occurs 40 days before Holy Week and spans an entire week, beginning on the first Sunday of carnival and culminating in the most significant event, “Domingo de Piñata,” on the second Sunday. During this day, the entire town comes alive with excitement and joy
Throughout the week, the streets of Alhama de Granada are filled with the lively performances of murgas and comparsas. These groups sing couplets that humorously and satirically recount the most notable events of the year, bringing laughter and reflection to the community. One of the most distinctive features of this carnival is the use of masks. Participants put on old clothes and cover their faces with rags to maintain anonymity. This tradition adds an element of mystery and fun to the festivities as they shout the phrase, “Oops how clumsy, you don’t know me,” in squeaky voices.
The carnival of Alhama de Granada is not just an event but a symbol of the town’s rich heritage and the exuberant character of its inhabitants. It is a time when the community comes together to celebrate, laugh, and enjoy the unique traditions that have been passed down through generations.
