Anton Corbijn – Ikonen

Anton Corbijn - Ikonen
Last week I visited the exhibition IKONEN by the Dutch photographer Anton Corbijn in the beautiful Handelsbeurs (Trade Fair) of Antwerp. Anton Corbijn is considered as one of the most influential photographers of our time, both in the music world and in portrait photography.
IKONEN presents a selection of his portrait photographs and brings three unseen series to Antwerp:
- Cemeteries – Intriguing black-and-white photographs of funerary monuments
- a somebody – Self-portraits of deceased greats from the music world
- Lenin, USSR – Lenin’s visual presence in the USSR in the early 1980s
Anton Corbijn is an icon for me and although the exhibition is special and very interesting, I personally would have liked to see more of his masterful portrait photography. I hope that soon an overview exhibition of Anton Corbijn’s work will be organized in the Netherlands, just like the exhibition of Stephan Vanfleteren organized by FOMU in Antwerp in 2020. Anton Corbijn deserves such an exhibition.

Handelsbeurs Antwerpen
The building where the exhibition is held, the Handelsbeurs (Trade Fair), is unique and worth a visit. Below is information that I have taken from the website of the trade fair:
Five centuries of the Handelsbeurs
After twenty years of vacancy, this nineteenth-century neo-Gothic pearl shines like never before. Just like in the 16th century, the Handelsbeurs is an inspiring meeting place and economic attraction. At the time of Antwerp’s Golden Age, this ‘mother of all Trade Fairs’ was a model for many other fairs in Europe. The evocative monument burned down completely in 1583 and in 1858 to rise again and again from its ashes.
