City walks Athens
Athens is one of the world’s oldest cities, with its recorded history spanning over 3,400 years, and its earliest human presence beginning somewhere between the 11th and 7th millennia BC. According to Greek mythology the city was named after Athena, the ancient Greek goddess of wisdom. Classical Athens was one of the most powerful city-states in ancient Greece. It was a centre for democracy, the arts, education and philosophy, and was highly influential throughout the European continent, particularly in Ancient Rome. For this reason, it is often regarded as the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy.
From 1993 to 1999 we lived in Kifissia, a suburb of Athens. We fell in love with Athens. We often took the metro to the Plaka and from there strolled through the city or to Piraeus and walked along the seaside.
Athens should not be a day trip, but you should visit the city for at least three days to explore it. Athens has so much to offer from a historic, cultural point of view, but also nightlife is great. And please visit a concert with Greek music, since Greek music is so beautiful, but regretfully undervalued.
We recommend you to visit the official guide to the city of Athens: This is Athens.
Under Country Series you will find more information about Greece (please click). We will on a regular basis add new cities to our “City walk” series.
