The Depot

The Depot of the museum Boijmans Van Beuningen

Hidden Treasures

Rotterdam is, I believe, one of the most interesting and beautiful cities in the world for modern architecture. Yesterday I went to Rotterdam to see the “creation” of this fantastic new building: The Depot. It is a fantastic building for photographers, already now, but also in the future when it will be open for public. Do not forget to observe what is happening in front of the building and in the mirrored façade ofthe building.

Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen is the first art storage facility in the world that offers access to a museum’s complete collection. The Depot has a different dynamic to that of the museum: there are no exhibitions, but you can browse amongst 151,000 artworks, alone or with a guide, and get behind-the-scenes glimpses of – among other things – conservation and restoration

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen’s collection contains more than 151,000 objects. In this column members of the museum staff choose their favourite artworks, now still hidden behind closed doors, but soon to be seen in the depot

Novelist Ernest van der Kwast, museum director Sjarel Ex and the architect Winy Maas let their dreams free in the depot. The exterior of Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen looks spectacular with its mirrored façade that reflects the entire city. The interior will be equally spectacular. For the interior design, Boijmans has teamed up with artists John Körmeling, Marieke van Diemen and Pipilotti Rist.
